Dialogues of the Steel Jaws of Death: Emanuel of EMP's Heavy Metal Maniacs

Cartoons. Before were just limited to whatever "seemed/felt" Metal (and if any of you say Inhumanoids was not Metal, you got a D'Composed sized problem coming your way. Honorable mention also goes out to Heavy Metal the Movie, the ultimate "being Metal with no intention" work of animation.). In recent years cartoons have been catering to our societies "funny bone", thanks in part to all those kids who grew up in the 80's having the opportunity to create cartoons based on Metal and not having the limitations of the previous decade impede our societies growth.

While there are many cartoon about Hard Rock/Heavy Metal, today we focus our attention on a brand new carton that carries the Banner of the Iron-Laced Stencil and with the hell-infused ink animating \m/ HEAVINESS \m/.

Dialogues of the Steel Jaws of Death presents Emanuel, the Architect of EMP's Heavy Metal Maniacs.

I6Z6A6N - Good day Emanuel, I would like to ask you to introduce yourself to the subscribers of insanity, aka, the Readers of Channel 13.

Emanuel - My name is Emanuel,i´m 26 years old, i´m from northern germany and i like chilli-burgers.

I6Z6A6N - What was the inspiration creating Heavy Metal Maniacs?

Emanuel - When i was around 16 years old, a friend of mine gave a party at his parents home. We where all big metal-fans and it really got out of hand. when his parents came back home it was madness. people jumping out of the windows, trying not to face them, beer and vomit everywhere.

little old me was vomiting right on the table when his parents where entering the room.

so at the next day, when i woke up on the sofa of one of my buddys, he showed me SOUTH PARK - The Movie on VHS. and since i really liked it, i started thinking about mixing the madness of being a metalhead with the insanity a cartoon-show can contain. this was when i started thinking about my very owen metal-cartoon-show.

I6Z6A6N - Based on what I have seen with Heavy Metal Maniacs, there is a m/ HEAVY m/ influence of Metal, but anything in particular from this music helped in its creation?

Emanuel - well, as a teenager i was into THRASH and SLEAZE mostly. and i guess it shows.

I6Z6A6N - The cartoons are pretty short, and average from 1:30 to 2:00 minutes, any particular reason why and is there a possibility that future episodes will have an expanded running time?

Emanuel - well, thats a big topic to me and our viewers... since i´m doing the animation, the writing, and the synchro completly on my owne, unforunaly i won´t be able to do longer episodes in the near future. but i´m working on a double-episode. and who knows, maybe we will extaned someday. to be honest, it would be a dream of my to do a 22minutes cartoon-show for tv ;)

I6Z6A6N - The characters Stulle, Schwarz & Dave are very "stereotypical" of Metalheads. Are these characters based on anybody you know personally or infamous artists/celebrities?

Emanuel - i thought i would be cool if you would immidiatly recognize which music each of them is representing. dave is all about thrash-metal, spike is the sleaze/glam-guy and stulle is a black/death-fan. but since metal is a big family, they have no problems living together and listen the different bands, preferred by the others. the only charackter, created after a celebrity and also a friend of mine is spike:

in the early phase of creating HMM(back then it was called DAYS OF ROCK) spike was the guitar-player. and he was pretty much a cartoon version of SLASH. always drunk, you never see his eyes. tight jeans and cowboy boots...

on the other hand there is a good friend of mine, who is a hardcore metalhead. and when we where kids, he alsways was the drunkest one of all of us.  it became sort of a running gag that he was always drunk, mumbling about his favourite bands, having always a bottle of cheap whisky in his hand... so this guy and SLASH where the inspiration for spike.

I6Z6A6N - This question has more to do with fans outsde of Deutschland (Germany), but at any time will there be subtitles in another language? I can somewhat follow the story, but due to the limitations of my understanding of German, I can only go so far =D

Emanuel - there are plans of doing a subtitled version. but i can´t promise anything.

I6Z6A6N - Are there any other Metal/Hard Rock cartoons that you have viewed that currently holds a Platinum Record status with you and if so, why?

Emanuel - the only other metal-cartoon i know is METALOCALYPSE, and i´m not a big fan of it. its not bad, just not my cup of tea.

I6Z6A6N - Now it's time to Go Behind the Cartoon and delve into the animated vortex known as "Emanuel", how long have you been a Metal fan and where did it all start?

Emanuel - i could talk hours about that^^ i try to give you a short version:
before i became a metal-head, i always was a big fan of movies and animation. i started doing small stop-motion movies, using the 8mm camera of my dad at the age of 6. until the age of 14 i was this strange kid, doing stop motion movies at the attic, most the time alone, for hours and hours.

then, slowly i discovered bands like SLIPKNOT and LIMP BIZKIT. i started digging and when i finally heard KILL EM ALL for the first time it hit me right in the face and changed me forever. i kept on making movies, but also became a party-hungry metalhead, causing mayhem whereever i was. i also started(like EVERY metalhead at some point) playing in different bands but since i was REALLY bad as a musician, it had no future. instead i used my skills in drawing and animation to do music-videos, cover artwork, shirts etc.

after working a few years in the merch-industry as a designer i now do the HMM, produced by EMP, the biggest mailorder for rock/metal related stuff in europa. its a lot of work, but lots of fun two. its a great company to work for and i hope to continue with this for quite some time.

I6Z6A6N - Is there anything from this form of music that attracted you to be a headbanger, and how has your experience with the music impacted your life?

Emanuel - as a kid it was the rage and energy that attracted to me. i was pissed, like every teenager, and metal was just the perfect sundtrack for this. and another great thing about metal: my parents HATED it^^

later i discovered how inspiring this music can be and how you can use it as a source of energy.

now, a little bid older, i don´t take it too seriously anymore. nowadays i have IMMORTAL in my itunes-playlist aswell as SUM 41. i just like the music, and it has become a big part in my life. as a fan and as a professional.

I6Z6A6N - The cartoon recently launched and has attracted a lot of viewers. What kind of feedback have you gotten from people who have seen the cartoons and has there been any celebriy Metalheads that have given a reaction?

Emanuel - the first reaction was: IT`S WAY TO SHORT! the second reation was: ITS A BAD COPY OF METALOCALYPSE! but later, the people viewed it as what it is: just funny little cartoon about our beloved heavy metal! so now we have lots of positive reaction.
as far as i know, there are no reactions by any big metal band.

I6Z6A6N - It is now time to animate a Heavy Metal Maniacs Top 13 Animations, aka Emanuel's Top 13 Metal albums. It can be in any running order you wish:

Emanuel -

1)appetite for destruction - gnr
2)kill em all - ´tallica
3)all killers, no fillers - sum 41
4)all shall fall - immortal

10)schlangensonne - eisregen
11)tempo of the damned - exodus
12)outlaw anthems - blood for blood

and many, many more...

I6Z6A6N - Do you have a background with animation, and if so, have you worked on a previous series of cartoons?

Emanuel - i did a lot of cartoons and animation, but i worked as a designer for metal-related merchandise. so this is my first real job in animation.

I6Z6A6N - How long do you think Heavy Metal Maniacs will continue?

Emanuel - until i made EVERY metal-joke possible ;)

I6Z6A6N - Are there any new endeavours you have planned with Metal in the not-so-distant future?

Emanuel - since most of my work is metal related, i guess you can say that. right now im working on a video i filmed at a big metal festival in germany about the question: what is metal!?, then im doing a new collection of shirts...

I6Z6A6N - I want to say many m/ DANKE! m/ for the time and opportunity for this interview. Any final words to end this interview?

Emanuel - KILL EM ALL!
